Lanark County
Lanarkshire was the most populous county
of Scotland. It included the burghs of Airdrie, Biggar, Bishopbriggs,
Coatbridge, East Kilbride, Glasgow, Govan, Govanhill, Hamilton,
Hillhead, Lanark, Maryhill, Motherwell, Partick, Rutherglen, and
Wishaw. Many of these burghs, along with other parts of the county,
were absorbed by the City of Glasgow in the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries. Lanark County Council was established by the Local Government
(Scotland) Act 1889, taking over powers from the Commissioners of
Supply, County Road Trust, and other local authorities. The County
Council was abolished in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland)
Act 1973, and the former county became part of Strathclyde Region.
The area which formerly constituted Lanarkshire is now divided between
Glasgow City, North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire; each administered
by its own unitary authority.
