1694 Hearth Tax
The records relating to the collection of the Hearth
Tax date from between 1691-1695 and are arranged by
county and within that, often by parish. This example
from Argyll (held by the National Archives of Scotland
reference E69/3/1) includes the name of the person
resident in the property and the number of hearths
taxed. Sometimes the designation of the resident is
included in the record too but occasionally just the
account of the hearth money collected survives.

1777 Servant Tax
In Scotland, taxes were levied on male servants between
1777-98 and on female between 1785-1792. Most of the
servants listed were engaged in domestic work. The
volumes containing the schedules of these taxes are
held by the National Archives of Scotland (reference
E326/5 and E326/6) and they give the location, name
of the master and usually the name of the servant.
